As a registered nurse, one of the unique aspects of my job that I treasure most is the opportunity to exercise my faith at work. I have often had the privilege of preaching to my co-workers and or patients while at work without repercussions. A few years ago, while in search of an RN position, I specifically prayed for a job where I may live out my faith and the Lord answered my prayer. Below, are instances where prayer at the bedside has proven to be a powerful tool.
Scenario 1: I walked into the patient’s room to administer her medications. The patient said ‘you better say a prayer, they’ve been having problems with this IV.’ The patient informed me that her intravenous (IV) line had been giving previous nurses problems. According to her, it had been changed a few times within the last few shifts.
I gently told her “as long as I am here, it must work; in fact, in the name of Jesus it must work!” I prepped the medication and connected the tubing to her wrist. I said a silent prayer, informed her that I would return when the medicine had finished and walked out of the room.
Upon my return, I discovered the unbelievable! To the patient’s surprise and to mine, not only did the medication run freely to completion, there were no complications at all and the IV line remained intact for the remainder of my shift. Praise be to God!
Scenario 2: I went in to obtain the patient’s vital signs ie blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature. I applied the blood pressure cuff to the patient’s left arm and got nothing…then I tried the right arm and got nothing. At this point, I was wondering, what is going on? The machine is not malfunctioned, the cuff is applied to the arm properly, what is wrong here? I decided to try the right arm again but this time include a special ingredient – prayer! I said a silent prayer “oh Lord, please touch this machine and let it work!” Right before our eyes, the machine produced the figures I needed! Praise the Lord! I told the patient I prayed and she agreed that prayer works.
Scenario 3: A few minutes before I went into the patient’s room, I reviewed one of my verses of the day via email and it was found in Psalm 143: 3 which reads “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” After reading that verse, I wondered how the Lord would manifest that verse in my life that day and I was about to find out. I walked into the patient’s room. Her husband sat on the bed with her and they both appeared to be crying. The atmosphere in the room was simply cold. I asked if the patient was okay. She answered no and instantly I knew that this was why the Lord gave me that verse today!
The patient included that she had thought that the cancer had gone, but it seems that it has returned and the doctor was just in the room to deliver the not so pleasant news. I was heartbroken and at that point the only thing I could do was to offer to pray with her. I asked her “do you mind if I pray with you?” She had no hesitation at all. I prayed with her, asking the Lord to fill her with his peace that passes all understanding. After the prayer, I could sense that there was a difference in her disposition. Throughout that day, she was a changed woman! Despite her present circumstance, the peace of the Lord had filled her heart and she testified “thank you for the prayer, I definitely felt the peace.”
I shared these stories not to boast of my faith or religiosity but to inspire you that the Christian life is very practical and when we allow Christ to live through us, miracles happen! I thank God for the opportunity to know Him and privileged to exercise my faith in Him.
Over the years, I have found that prayer is a powerful tool – it brings comfort, deliverance, and peace to the brokenhearted. It is a practice that can be indulged in, by all. The only requirement though is that one is born-again – a child of God. John 9:31 says “Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” If you do not have a personal relationship with Christ, today is the day! This is really wonderful. I agree that prayer works.
Sometimes it may take a while for the answer to come but it comes eventually.
I struggled with an addiction to pornography and masturbation for over 12 years.
I prayed so much during that time but my victory was not immediate until 2021 December.
Since then I’ve been completely free!
I believe prayer works.
I agree with you, often times I make it a point of praying with my patients in the morning before the end of my shift, knowing I will ask them if I can pray with them it drives me to deliver the best care to them and also I can ask the light of salvation to shine on them during prayer I use it as a form of evangelism. Our faith must be lived out it’s not by professing it alone! Thank you for sharing
