Dreadlocks is a type of hairstyle that is characterized by allowing hair to grow without combing which eventually leads to the hair being locked in place from the roots downward. There are a few different kinds of locs. Some loc’d styles are carefully sectioned and styled in such a way to make it appealing. Some of you may reference Samson in the Bible as having locs. Please read Judges 13 and Numbers 6 for more context.
Samson was a Nazarite. Nazarites were a group of people who had made a vow to be fully consecrated to God (Numbers 6). Part of that consecration was to not cut their hair. This was a visible sign of their commitment to God. Not cutting their hair was not a hairstyle to be modeled after. Rather, the uncut hair was an outward symbol with much deeper meaning.
Beyond the physical, there is a principle that we should model our Christian faith after. As believers we are called to full consecration and commitment to God. Such should be accompanied by an outward evidence such as modesty, simplicity of life, and godly character.
Also, Samson’s hair was not the source of his strength, God was. Hair does not have inherent power. Furthermore, we are expected by God to take good care of it with His help as good stewards of the hair He has given to us Proverbs 3:5,6.
In the New Testament, Paul mentions that men are not expected to have long hair and provides guidelines for hairstyles for women. Please reference 1 Corinthians 11:14, 1 Timothy 2:9, 1 Peter 3:3-6. Ultimately, there has to be a physical difference between the two genders that God created. Women are expected to have long hair. Feminine appearance of men in their hairstyling is not according to God’s divine design.
All in all, it is not enough to say ‘Samson had locs therefore I will also loc my hair.’ We need to understand the context within which Samson’s hair was kept the way that it was and allow the Lord help us to derive the lessons and principles that are applicable to our lives today.
If you want to loc your hair consider this:
Samson’s Nazarite vow including his hair was God’s instruction
- Has God instructed you to keep your hair as such as He did Samson?
- Also, I would employ you to do some research regarding locs in the world and its foundation
- Lastly, let God lead you through prayer.
