Modesty: Staying Comfortable AND Modest in 100 Degree Weather

This week on this side of the world, the weather has been quite unimaginably hot. It is the kind of heat that weakens the entire body upon stepping out of one’s nicely air-conditioned home. It brings to mind the reality of hell fire; and to imagine that such a place is far hotter than what we are currently feeling is a scary thought! Because of the scorching heat a lot of people women in particular, use the weather as an excuse to dangerously expose their nakedness all in the name of “it is too hot outside.” However in reality revealing our bodies is not the solution to the dangerous heat wave that we are experiencing. Walking on the street with very little to no clothes on does not make anyone cooler; but rather hotter.

As a Christian woman in this modern world and who is experiencing this type of heat wave, what do I do? Do I throw modesty out of the window and dress like ‘them’ because it is too hot? Do I compromise because “God will understand” the predicament of the weather? Hmm! The answer is a big fat NO! This is the time that we Christian women should rise and take a firm stand for Jesus in the way that we dress! This is the time that Jesus is looking for faithful servants who will be steadfast in obeying His command “that thy that nakedness be NOT discovered thereon.” -Exodus 20:26 It is not about stripping our bodies of clothes to stay cool; but rather putting on the proper fabric of clothing that naturally will make us feel comfortable even in the midst of unbearable heat.

The Lord has shown me ways to stay cool, comfortable, AND modest during this hotter season. Below, I will discuss definite ways to stay airy and modest in 100+ degree weather.

1. Drink lots of fluids: the Summer heat calls for frequent intake of fluids. Not soft drinks or sodas; but water. It helps us to stay hydrated in the hot Summer heat! Make sure the water is a little cool so that it soothes the inner body and aids in helping the outer reach the same goal.

2. Choose cotton made clothing and undergarments: I have observed that cotton made clothing are not prone to stick to the skin. It knows when to draw the line ;). It is light and certainly breathable. It surely works to keep me airy in the heat. But I shall let the experts speak more about it in greater detail!

3. Avoid tight clothing – replace with loose clothing: tight clothing makes us hotter! Stay away from spandex. These materials stick to the skin. Because it so tightly attached to the skin, air is not able to easily pass through it to keep us cool. Always be sure that your clothes are not skin tight; go up one size if you must. For instance, I am a size small but more than 90% of the time I buy clothes in a medium size. As well light Summer skirts are a great way to invite air to our body through our clothes. But remember to wear a slip whenever necessary to escape from accidentally revealing anything that should not be seen in public!

4. Wear hair up: implementing this technique has delivered me from sweating profusely in the Summer. Thank God for the revelation and wisdom! In the past I’d always anticipated Summer mainly for the purpose of wearing my hair loose, and curly. In retrospect, I was doing myself a massive disservice! By the grace of God, I have quite a significant amount of hair. Not only does it carry a lot of weight; along with the weight is heat! And wearing my hair down in this heat is a big no no! For this Summer, I have been wearing my hair off of my neck and shoulders through variations of buns; I tell you it’s doing some wonders in keeping me from excessively sweating! Even if you have shorter hair, this technique will be beneficial to you as well.

5. Wear open sandals and slippers to prevent accumulation of sweat: slippers and sandals are excellent in the Summer. It helps our feet and toes get some much needed air! Continuously keeping toes in socks and closed shoes in the hotter season will amass sweat which will lead to an unpleasant stench upon removal. If your job requires you to wear closed shoes, I would recommend sticking a pair of sandals or slippers in your bag and slip them on after work! 🙂

6. Stay calm: evade rigorous activities when out in the sun.

7. Wear color: “Light-colored clothing reflects light and dark-colored clothing absorbs it. The more heat that is absorbed the hotter the clothing is and the hotter you are. Furthermore, light-colored clothing looks softer and cooler.”

If these tips are put into practice followed by these guidelines, God will miraculously keep us comfortable under the heat of the sun in Jesus’ name!
